Information and communication technologies play pivotal role in disseminating agricultural
information to the ultimate clientele i.e. farmers.
Now a day majority of the population possess mobile or smart phones and is becoming an
essential device for all types of users irrespective of the age group.
In India mobile technology has unleashed a paradigm shift in the communication medium and
provides an opportunities to reach out to the masses.
To tap this vast potential medium of communication, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kheda has initiated
Voice SMS service for the farmers of the Kheda district in December 2012.
KVK provides voice-messaging service that acts as automatic voice dialler that sends the
recorded voice messages in the form of automatic phone calls to the farmers. This service is
provided to all farmers irrespective of telecom network. Presently this service is being made
available only to the registered farmers at free of cost by all the registered farmers.
Approximately 3320 farmers are getting benefit of Voice SMS service.
In this service, KVK sends voice SMS regarding crop based location specific advisory
information and need based customized information recommended by KVK experts. Information
on availability of quality planting material at KVK, details of weather of a particular
location, pest and disease alerts, its control measures, frequent alert to the farmers on
time to time about various schemes, information on various events etc so that farmers can
have a comprehensive knowledge of the different crop activities to be pursued in each month.
This Voice SMS service helps farmers in decision making to great extent by making timely
alert through Voice SMS.
This system has been perceived as an effective medium to disseminate useful agricultural
advisory information to a larger agricultural community since it alleviates the language
barriers of visual communication and also adds a personal touch to the communication.
The farmers will get an automated voice call as output depicting the different
operations for the concerned crop in the given month.
